A Shelters Plea

I work at a locale SPCA ( Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ) chapter in Southern NJ. People don’t give my fellow coworkers the credit they deserve. We are a shelter organization that is nonprofit, that houses the county’s outcaste pets, as well as those forgotten and abused. We work for minimum wage, and stay at the facility long hours and sometimes into the night, all for the comfort of the animals. Today I write this on Christmas day. I was at the shelter at 6am this morning, cleaning with a crew of 8 people over four hundred cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, snakes, lizards and other various critters. Where were you?

I volunteer most of the time, off the clock cause where always running in the red financially. Being non-profit and all. I sit in the cold at locale rabies clinics. Trying to raise funds to care for the animals and make sure I can get a paycheck every week for the hours I do work on clock. I promote spay and neuter, adoptions as well as low cost micro chipping so maybe on occasion animals that come to us, can find their way back home.

The shelter is my life, I clean, care for and comfort the forgotten pets of society, and treat them like my own children. I have adopted four dogs and three cats as well as various other small animals into my home, each of them having their own story, and sadly were deemed low chance of adoption. Maybe if people adopted more, euthanasia in shelters would become non existent you know? That’s what I strive for. To promote shelters, and get the idea out there.

I am also a euthanasia technician. People blame them for putting down animals, saying how cruel they must be, how heartless. Though they don’t see our hearts breaking every time we draw up the solution. They don’t see us cry over the bodies of the forgotten. A past Christmas present a child outgrew. A cute puppy that was only cute till it hit the chewing stage. The little kitten that now bites after being declawed. Hell I even saw a cat one time given up cause it’s white hair didn’t match the color of the new sofa. It was a black sofa. Go figure the furniture was more important then the living being that they tossed out like trash. That cat spent 10 long years in that home and knew nothing of the world outside. You didn’t have to watch that cat’s heart break, and search for it’s beloved owner day after day…. Wondering what they had done so wrong….

Or the pit bull that waited endlessly at the front gate of the kennel. Looking for it’s master… till it slowly stopped looking and went into a deep depression. Refusing to eat… to drink… to even move. People say we are cruel.

We didn’t put them here. We didn’t forget.

So hence I end my little story. I have probably already wasted your precious time. I saw this on the net and figured I’d give it a shot. I need some cash to help pay for my one dogs back treatment and the medication for my other dogs seizures. 25% of all money earned from this will be donated to the shelter I work for so spread the word on this mooch page. The more money raised, the more the animals get supported!

“What beautiful work. Thank you. We adopted a throw away who ended up being a victim of feline lukemia because of her humble background. It was tragic. We adored her. Nala was her name. Although her life was short, she put pawprints on the hearts of anyone who met her. While mour hearts are breaking for the loss of her, your mooch reminded me of what her life could have been had we not connected. Thanks for what you do. It gave me some peace. Robin on Maui”

“I wish I had the money to tip you. As an animal lover (3 dogs, 2 cats, and a handful of fish) I applaud you. Keep up the good work.”

“we have 5 cats - 3 just adopted in the past couple of years. 2 at the same time from a no kill shelter and the last baby from outside our front door. we KNOW the cruelties of the world at large and do what we can to help. along with feeding our 5 that own us, we feed about 9-10 that live outdoors -- and we lost 2 of those kitties in the past six months to speeding cars! I wish we had the means to capture them all and get them fixed and turn them loose again (feral cats are difficult to domesticate again). If we all just took $5 per month and donated it to 'no kill' shelters --- the pet population would would diminish DRAMATICALLY!! Pass the word!”

“As a person who has always had animals (currently, a yorkie/long haired chihuahua mix, a betta fish and a turtle, rescued from a busy highway), my heart goes out to all the stray and abandoned pets of the world. Seeing as how you have practically made a lifestyle caring for animals, I applaud you. Keep up the good work.”

“Your mooch brought me to tears. Every cat my wife and I have had the pleasure of bringing into our home has either been adopted or, in one case, I took a stray and gave him a home. (You never "own" a cat ... it's like having a roommate who doesn't pay rent!) People don't understand the value of volunteerism. You are appreciated, and those who know, know how much love and brightness you bring to each one of those gentle hearts you care for. Thank you for doing what you do.”

“I know how you feel, and never once have I blamed the euthanasia technician. Some things, no matter how hard and painful they are, just need to be done. I'd rather the animal have a peaceful release than a life of suffering. People as a whole are cruel; there are very few willing to go the distance, as you have. For that, you have my adoration and my well-wishes.”

“Awwww that poor kitty:) Mine was adopted from the Human Society. That is so sad that animals have to be in cages because there are not many people who want to adopt. I hope this helps your fund:) God Bless You!”

“I used to volunteer at a shelter in south Georgia and I assisted with euthenasia... it is heartbreaking. People tend to shoot off at the mouth before they know what they're talking about, too... I know that much. Thanks for your dedication and for helping the animals!”
